# Install your Minecraft server

> Choose a server family and versions, complete installation, and join the server for the first time.

Your Minecraft service must have an assigned online node before installation can run.

## Choose the server software

1. Open **Dashboard → Services** and select the Minecraft service.
2. Open **Server → Installation**.
3. Choose one of the server families offered by the dashboard.
4. Select the Minecraft, software, and Java versions shown as compatible.
5. Enable Geyser or Floodgate only when the selected family reports support.
6. Click **Install** once.

AppLaunch downloads and writes the server runtime into the service volume. The dashboard shows installation stages and the latest installation result. Console, files, installation settings, and server configuration may remain locked while an installation is active.

## Use a custom server JAR

For **Custom**:

1. Open **Files**.
2. Upload your Java server file.
3. Rename it to `server.jar`.
4. Return to **Installation** and select **Custom**.

Custom mode does not download a runtime or verify that the JAR, Java version, mods, or libraries are compatible. Keep the original file and follow the server project's own installation requirements.

## Wait for the first start

Open **Console** and follow the newest output. Do not repeatedly reinstall or restart while the server is generating files or a world. If the software requires an EULA, use the supported configuration or file workflow and accept it only after reading the terms.

## Join the server

Open **Domains** or **Ports** and copy the displayed connection information. If the hostname uses an SRV record, players can join with the hostname alone after DNS propagates; otherwise include the displayed port.

Before inviting players:

1. Join once with the correct game edition and version.
2. Confirm the world loads and console shows no repeating errors.
3. Configure whitelist, operators, difficulty, game mode, and view distance.
4. Create a backup.
