# Configure Minecraft server settings

> Change supported server properties and runtime settings, then apply them safely.

Open **Server → Server Configuration** after installation has created the configuration file.

## Edit supported properties

The dashboard displays the fields supported by the current runtime and marks whether each is editable. Change only values whose effect you understand, then click **Save Changes**.

Settings can include gameplay, player limits, networking, world, and server behavior depending on the installed family. The dashboard source of truth is the set of fields shown for that server; unsupported fields should be edited only according to the server project's official instructions.

## Apply changes

Most server-property changes require a clean restart:

1. Create a backup for important changes.
2. Save the configuration.
3. Stop the server cleanly.
4. Start it and watch **Console**.
5. Join and confirm the change.

## Change the runtime

The **Runtime** section exposes supported Java choices. Select a version compatible with the installed Minecraft and server software versions. An incompatible Java version can prevent startup; record the current value before changing it.

Use **Server → Installation** for a different server family or software build. Reinstalling server software is more significant than changing one property, so back up first and confirm plugin or mod compatibility.

## Geyser and Floodgate

Installation offers Geyser or Floodgate only where family support is known or explicitly acknowledged. Geyser also requires UDP networking. If support is marked unknown, continuing may require manual configuration and is not a guarantee that Bedrock crossplay will work.

For network allocation, see [Minecraft domains and ports](/minecraft/domains-and-ports/).
